Sixteenth century ivory panel from Ceylon
Description
Beautifully carved ivory panel probably was part of a casket. Carved in Sry Lanka in the Portuguese colonial period. The motif is European but the interpretation is Sry Lankan ca 1580. Made for the local Portuguese and could have been part of a casket or cabinet. Amongst Portugals East Indian Empire Ceylon or Sry Lanka in the period of 1550-1650 produced the finest quality ivory carvings.
