1760 Russian nielloed silver box

Description

Ca 1750-60 Russian silver box with engraved and niello decoration. The original fire gilding is in very good condition especially on the inside of the box. The niello decoration is also in decent condition. The box is unmarked as usual for many pieces of silver made in this period in Veliky Ustyug.

The town of Veliky Ustyug is already mentioned in the thirteenth century. In the sixteenth century the town produced silver work was one of the best made in Russia and the tradition continued up to the late 19 th century. Amongst the traditional silver work nielloed decoration bexame its most famous product. The best period for nielloed silver work is from the early 18 th century up to 1830 .
