1700 silver and shell spoon
Description
Ca 1680-1700, silver and nautilus shell spoon. Since Nautilus shells are only found in the far eastern part of the Indian Ocean these shells were brought back to Europe by Portuguese and Dutch sailors and bacame highly prized collectors rarity from 1580 onwards. Every European Royal kunstkammer would have one at least , either set into silver as a “Nautilus cup” / many times engraved / or mounted as jewellery or just as a specimen. So a spoon would be just an object to have and probably not used.
